Dr. Heath is a distinguished neurologist and military officer with an exceptional career marked by groundbreaking medical achievements and leadership roles across diverse settings.

 

As the sole neurologist at a prominent 700+ bed tertiary care hospital system, Dr. Heath oversees the care of 130-140 critically ill, complex neurological cases weekly. Specializing in acute stroke care, she directs a Comprehensive Stroke Center renowned for its life-saving interventions such as onsite TPA and mechanical thrombectomy evaluations. Her expertise extends to epilepsy management, having reviewed over 800 EEGs in a 29-week period. Notably, her RVU billing exceeds the MGMA 2021 90th percentile, reflecting her outstanding clinical productivity.

 

Commissioned in 2003 as a Commander in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, Dr. Heath has held pivotal roles including Group Surgeon for U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa, and Pentagon’s Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Her service includes deployment as Group Surgeon II MHG in Afghanistan and leadership roles in medical readiness and training, earning her the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal and multiple Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medals.

 

Dr. Heath’s academic journey began at Louisiana State University, where she excelled as a Neurosurgical House Officer before her tenure at Howard University Hospital as a Surgical Resident. Her commitment to medical education is underscored by her role as a mentor and educator for residents and medical students, a passion that extends to her founding and instruction of the Science on the Brain Program, aimed at fostering early interest in healthcare careers among underrepresented minorities.

 

A prolific researcher and presenter, Dr. Heath has contributed groundbreaking studies to prominent conferences, including the American Epilepsy Society and Neurocritical Care Society. Her research spans critical topics such as Ketamine use in refractory status epilepticus and the impact of early neurology exposure on career decisions in medicine.

 

Beyond her medical achievements, Dr. Heath is a dedicated advocate for diversity and inclusion in medicine, co-chairing hospital committees and spearheading initiatives like the Diversity Career Panel for Resident Physicians. She has been a keynote speaker at various national and international conferences, addressing disparities in healthcare and promoting cultural competency.

 

Dr. Heath graduated with honors from Howard College of Medicine, where she served as Class President and received the Surgeon General’s Navy Female Physician of the Year Award in 2015. Her accolades also include the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal and numerous scholarships for leadership and academic excellence.
